Abstract

292,213. Loon, J. van. March 10, 1927. Carbon and charcoal.-Active carbons or decolorizing charcoals are obtained by grinding carbonaceous material, e.g. wood charcoal, anthracite or bituminous coal, and used or unused decolorizing or active carbons, in the presence of a wetting agent such as water or benzol, the material and wetting agent being heated so that the grinding is effected at a raised temperature, the carbon being then separated. The grinding may be under pressure. A solvent . or a mixture of .solvents which will remove the tarry and other organic impurities and the inorganic substances in the material may be employed as wetting agent, e.g. alcohol, benzene, toluene, or dilute solution of inorganic acids, alkalis and salts. Consecutive quantities of solvent may be used. The grinching is continued until the particles are 9-2Á or less in size. The temperature is such that most of the impurities in the material are liquified. By employing autoclaves &c. and pressure, temperatures above the boiling point of the liquid may be used. In an example, linden wood charcoal is ground at 150- 180‹ C. in the presence of water in a rotating autoclave containing steel balls, the process taking about 10 hours. The carbon is then separated, washed if necessary, and dried.
