Abstract

291,864. Simon, Ltd., H., and Jolley, F. R. March 8, 1927. Asbestos.-In separating asbestos from the rock with which it is found, the crushed rock and fibre is worked into a suspension in water, the rock and heavy matter separating out during the working whilst the liquid containing the asbestos and light where it is brought to a quiescent matter is led off to a settling tank -condition, the asbestos then being removed and dried. In the apparatus shown, the crushed ore drops into a trough b provided with a screen c, Fig. 5, which directs the material to the sides of the trough. A worm d agitates the contents of the trough and the lighter asbestos is fed forward and through the pipe k to the settling tank m whilst the heavier material falls through a slot e and may be further separated by a grid f. A conveyer g carries the material across the grid f and delivers any material which has not passed through the grid to a trough h from which it is further fed by a worm to a trough j similar to trough b. The conveyer g during its return movement delivers the heavy rock &c. to a discharge outlet i. The tank m has an inclined bottom and sides so that it increases in capacity away from the pipe n. The liquid is thus brought to a quiescent state and the asbestos is taken from the bottom of the tank by a conveyer o The water continuously circulates through the troughs b, j, tank m, and passage g, and an overflow chamber r and ball valves may be provided.
