Abstract

291,725. Naamlooze Vennootschap Algemeene Norit Maatschappij. Oct. 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Divided on 279.104. Carbon.-Gas activated carbon which has been derived from carbonaceous material of vegetable, animal, or mineral origin, by the action of superheated steam or other gases or vapours at high temperatures, may be further activated by treatment with activating, oxidising, or purifying non- alkaline chemicals and subsequent heating to incandescence, without previously washing to remove any part of the chemicals. These chemicals may be subsequently extracted or washed out from the carbon. Active carbon impregnated with an activating agent may be heated by causing an electric current to pass through the mixture whereby the products of electrolysis of the added chemicals may still further increase the activity of the carbon. Spent active carbon may also be treated by this process. As activating agents the following are specified :-phosphoric, hydrochloric, and nitric acids, chlorides and compounds from which chlorine is evolved, phosphates, nitrates, sulphates, bisulphates sulphides, peroxides, perchlorate and other per salts and oxidisers. Specifications 155,610 and 264,854 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use in the process of potassium and sodium hydrates and carbonates and organic acids and salts, and the regeneration of used active carbon. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specifiaatian as
