Abstract

Air, preventing admission of.-Ingress of air to a muffle is prevented by a wall or curtain of fluid which is caused to fall or is projected across. the entrance. In the apparatus shown in which opposed streams of water, oil, or other liquid pass across the entrance opening of the muffle 1, the liquid is raised from a tank 13 by a motordriven pump 7 and is passed to a tank 4 having an overflow weir 5, from which extends an inclined shoot 16 of the same width as the goods conveyer 17. The liquid is collected in the sump 3 and return through the pipe 14 to the tank. A connection 11 from the pressure side of the pump 7 supplies liquid to a perforated pipe 12 from which it is projected upwards to meet the falling stream from the shoot 16. The lower end of the shoot may be shaped as a nozzle or fitted with gauze screens, and the supply pipe 9 preferably extends across the tank 4 and is perforated throughout its length. A single pump may supply liquid to both ends of the muffle.
