291,504. Jackson, L. Mellersh -(American Encaustic Tiling Co., Ltd.). Feb. 28, 1927. Tunnel kilns.-In a tunnel kiln for use in the manufacture of ceramic ware &c., the muffle 5 has heating-flues on all sides, and is formed with a floor lining 27 of vitreous material, in direct contact with which move carrier slabs 28 for the ware. The slabs are preferably made of carborundum, and friction between the slabs and the floor may be reduced by silica sand or powdered quartz. In the double kiln shown each muffle is supported by a solid wall G and pillars 7, and is heated by a series of burners 12 delivering into the space 16 beneath the floor. Transverse walls 11 in the preheating-zone prevent intermixture of the gases from the different burners until they reach the flue space 6 between the muffles, and separate outlet connections for the gases from the main heating and preheating zones are provided. In the main heating-zone both the muffles and the side and top flue spaces are made wider than in the preheating-zone shown in Fig. 3. Passageways giving access to the muffle are formed by tubular housings extending across the flue space and connecting registering apertures in the muffle and outer walls. An apparatus for moving the ware-carrying slabs through the muffle comprises a ram driven from a power shaft 50 through worm gearing 52, a clutch 54, pinions 57, 59, 60, 62, and a rack 63. When the clutch 54 is disengaged the ram can be withdrawn quickly by operation of the hand wheel 66.
