Abstract

291,476. Brechnell, Munro, & Rogers, Ltd., and Dolman, H., J. Dec. 1, 1926. Delivery of liquids.-The handle 14 for operating the plunger of a pump through rack and pinion gear 12, 11 is normally looked by a controlling-bar 27, but after prepayment by a coin x and initial movement of the handle, the bar is free to move downwards and the handle can be turned through a predetermined range and back under the control of pawl mechanism which reverses automatically at each end of the travel. A sleeve 25, Fig. 4, is clutched to the operating spindle 9, but, may be disengaged therefrom by manipulating the collar 79 to permit operation of the pump without coin and quantity control. Normally the sleeve 25 turns with the spindle 9 and drives a controlling wheel 42 counterclockwise, return movement being prevented by one member 44 of a double pawl 43 until a stop 47 on the wheel engages a tooth 49 on the pawl and turns the pawl on pivot 46, so that the member 44 is free and the member 45 engages the teeth. During this movement of the pawl, a spring 63 yields to permit the head 43<a >of the pawl to pass the square abutment 60. The handle can now only be turned backwards to fhe original position, when a stop 48 on the controlling wheel again reverses the pawl. The handle may operate the spindle 9 through a friction clutch. and there may be lost motion between the spindle and the pump plunger to prevent actuation by the to-andfro movement permitted by the pawls or by the coin-control device. The coin and quantity control mechanism is mounted as a unit in a casing 1, 2 which may be attached to the spindle 10 of existing liquid delivery apparatus. A flange 84 on the stem 13 of the handle prevents its detachment from the spindle 9 when the door (not shown) of the pumping-apparatus is closed. The first Provisional Specification comprises also modifications in which the wheel 11 is the controlling wheel, or the controlling wheel is replaced by a rack which may be the rack 12, or the pump is replaced by apparatus for delivering packages. Price-changing mechanism.- The stops 47, 48 are carried by sector-shaped plates 50, 56 adjustable on the controlling wheel. The plate 50. slotted at 53, is secured by a bolt 52 which may pass through any of the holes 54 in the wheel. The plate 56 is adjustable about a fixed pivot 57. In a modification in which the wheel 42 may be set to turn through more than 360 degrees, stops secured in two of the holes 54 engage opposite sides of an arm mounted freely on the spindle and this arm throws the pawl over first in one direction and then in the other. Coin action, with stationary coin forming abutment.-The coin x resting upon a shelf 19 on a slide 20 forms an abutment for one arm 34 of a bell-crank lever 31, 34 pivoted upon the controlling-bar 27. The sleeve 25 on the operating spindle carries a cam 26 which turns in the clockwise direction and depresses the bar 27. The lever-arm 31 is thus turned aside to clear a stop on the casing. Coin-discharging mechanism. - When the spindle 9 and sleeve 25 are turned back, the cam 26 turns the bar 27 about a pivot 28, so as to move the slide 20 to the left, with the shelf 19 beyond the coin, and the hinged side 23 of the coin holder turned away leaving the coin free to drop into the drawer 3. Fraud, preventing. -- The coin-testing mechanism is of the kind described in Specification 275,278. The hinge-piece, not shown, for liberating defective coins is turned by the initial movement of the controlling wheel 42. A pin 71 on the wheel moves clear of a lever 70 and allows a spring 72 to operate an arm 69 which engages the hinge-piece.
