Winding webs.-A rotary film holding device is adapted to support the film in spiral fashion with adjacent turns of the film spaced apart. The holder comprises a hub 5 with openwork cheeks 7, 8 having spoke-like arms provided with holes which, taken collectively, lie in a spiral path of constant pitch centred at the hub 5. In these holes rest pins 10 having a limited sliding movement parallel to the hub 5, and adapted, when displaced inwards, to form supports for the edges of the film. For winding or unwinding the film, the holder is detachably mounted in a framework upon slidable spring-loaded axles 13, 131 having keys 14 engaging the hub 5. The spool of film to be treated is mounted between a rotary fixed axle 1 and a non-rotary, spring-loaded, slidable axle 2 carrying a friction disc 3 which brakes the rotation of the spool. Mounted in bearings 20, 21 surrounding the axles 13, 13<1> are screwthreaded rods 18 prevented from rotation by keys 19 and engaging the internally threaded bores of gear wheels 17 driven by gear wheels on the axles 13, 13<1>, so that when these axles are rotated by turning the wheel 15 the rods 18 are longitudinally displaced. On the end of each rod are mounted members 25, 26 carrying inclined planes 27, 28 which are adapted to displace the pins 10. When winding film from the spool on to the holder, the wheel is turned to cause the inclined planes 27 to move radially away from the hub, so that the pins 10 are pushed in seriatim to provide supports for successive turns of film as they are wound on. To wind a finished film back from the holder to its spool, a pulley 29 normally loose on the shaft 13, is coupled to this shaft 13, is coupled to this shaft by a spring pin 30, so that the shaft 13 is coupled to the shaft 1 by a belt engaging the pulleys 29, 33. Rotation of the shaft 1 by a handle 32 then winds the film from the holder to the spool, and simultaneously produces displacement of the rods 18 so that the inclined planes 28 move towards the hub 5 and push the pins 10 outwards seriatim, as these are relieved of film, leaving a free path for the film between the holder and the spool.
