Abstract
290,089. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Selden Co.). Sept. 14, 1927. Catalytic apparatus.-In the catalytic oxidation of sulphur dioxide at least a part of the reaction gas is passed through heat exchanging elements embedded in the catalyst, then in the reverse direction through a second series of heatexchangers surrounding the first, and then after a second reversal of direction through the catalyst itself. Additional quantities of gas may be admitted directly to the reaction space or may be mixed with the gas issuing from the heatexchangers before this is passed through the catalyst. The heat-exchangers may extend through the whole depth of the catalyst or only through part of it, or the principal layer of catalyst may be followed by a second layer through which the heat-exhan,gers do not externd separated frem the first layer by a gas space with or without baffles. Numerous embodiments of the invention are described, of which that shown in Fig. 11 is typical. The gas entering at 5 passes through the heat-exchangers 9, 11 and is mixed with cold gas from the tubes 27 before passing through the principal catalytic mass 19. Additional gas may be admitted at 14. A second uncooled layer of catalyst 29 is provided.
