Methyl chloride; halogen derivatives of hydrocarbons. - Halogen derivatives of organic compounds, more particularly of hydrocarbons, e.g. methane, are produced by bringing together in the vapour state the halogen and the hydrocarbon mixed with a body capable of combining more rapidly than the hydrocarbon w i t h the halogen and thereby initiating the reaction. Alkali metals in particular are suitable as "initiators." In the production of methylchloride the apparatus utilized comprises a jacketed chamber a into which a mixture of chlorine and methane is admitted bv the inlet c and methane and sodium vapour through the inlet d. The sodium vapour is provided by passage of methane over metallic sodium contained in a heated vessel g. Cooling jackets b, c are provided to keep the temperature in the chamber a from rising above 300‹ C. When the temperature of vaporization of the hydrocarbon is above 300‹ an inert carrier gas such as nitrogen is employed to convey the hydrocarbon vapours into the reaction space or the reaction is carried out under reduced pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use as initiators of metals other than alkali metals, of non- metallic substances such as arsenic or phosphorus, and as hydrocarbons suitable for halogenation higher homologues of methane such as pentane and C18H38 and aromatic hydrocarbons. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
