Abstract
289,063. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. April 22, 1927, [Convention date]. Processes.-Cellulose esters of the higher fatty acids, which are insoluble in the usual organic solvents, and the soluble cellulose esters of such acids such as are prepared by the process of Specification 283,181, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and also the mixed esters and ether-esters, are worked up into moulded articles and shaped masses, coatings, &c. without the use of solvents or plasticising-agents, by subjection to mechanical pressure at a raised temperature, for example, at 100-150‹ C., at which the cellulose derivative becomes plastic but lower than that at which the material is liquid. Films, rods, plates, insulating bodies, floorcloth and washable carpets and cloths may be so made; and for such uses the cellulose derivatives may be mixed with cork, wood meal, mineral colours, gypsum, heavy spar, higher fatty acids or their derivatives, wax, tar and asphalt, cellulose derivatives, natural and artificial resins, phosphoric acid esters, &c. For some uses the material may be strengthened by pressing into the mass during or after the pressing operation reinforcing material such as threads, woven fabric or wire gauze. In examples, the following materials are employed -cellulose laurate, elaidic ester of cellulose, the cellulose ester of the acid from cocoanut oil, cellulose acetate-stearate, and ethylcellulose laurate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the addition of phosphoric acid esters. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
