Cages.-The perches in bird cages are supported at each end by resilient devices which permit movement either in a vertical direction or in both vertical and horizontal directions. Fig. 11 shows a form in which the perch 1, perforated to ride on the cage wire, is supported on a coiled spring 15 resting on a cross-bar of the cage; Fig. 12 shows a modification in which the end of the perch is suspended by a coiled spring. The perch may ride between the cage wires and pairs of springs enclose adjacent wires, or the perch may ride on a cage wire the wires adjacent to which guide the coiled springs. The ends of the perches may have forks or hooks for engaging the cage wires or may be grooved for this purpose. Fig. 21 shows a form in which the perch is supported by a flat spring 23 having a re-entrant part 21; this form may be modified by providing two parts 21, and the flat surfaces 23, 24 may be slotted for fitting on to existing cages. In Fig. 24 the perch is supported by a coiled spring 26 wound round a bar and having its end working in a slot 27 in the perch; in a modification, the spring comprises a resilient length of wire a vertical arm of which is secured by a clip to the cage wire. As shown in Fig. 29, the spring 36 is bent upon itself, the loop being placed in a recess in the perch. To provide resilience in both horizontal and vertical directions the perch may be supported by a wire 32, Fig. 25, which is under the influence of both vertical and horizontal springs 30, 31 enclosed in a flat casing secured by a clamp to the cage wire.
