Abstract

288,735. Norris, E. D. T., and Ferranti, Ltd. Jan. 17, 1927. Right to Patent relinquished. Thermometers.-Apparatus for measuring the highest temperature in an electrical apparatus, particularly in an oil-immersed transformer, comprises a thermometer subjected to the highest temperature of the surrounding fluid and means for adding to this temperature a value corresponding to the winding temperature-gradient, this value being taken to be proportional to the square of the load current. In the form shown, the thermometer 2, subjected to the highest temperature of the oil surrounding the transformer 1, is further heated by a resistance coil 4 connected to the secondary of a transformer 5 the primary of which is excited in accordance with the load current. The total rise of temperature of the thermometer is shown by an indicator 3 having a pointer 7 moving over a scale 13 which may be graduated in percentages of maximum safe load. The pointer carries a contact 8 co-operating with a fixed contact 9 to close an alarm or relay circuit 6. To compensate, for variations in atmospheric temperature the scale may be pivoted at 11 and adapted to be displaced about the pivot either automatically or by a knob 12 when such variations occur. In a modifica. tion the winding temperature-gradient may be indicated by an ammeter movement applied with current from the secondary of a transformer as above, the reading of the ammeter being mechanically added to that of the thermometer subjected to the highest temperature in the oil.
