Ball and like mills.- In a pulverizing mill comprising a rotatable tube or housing 4 and a roller 37 loosely mounted therein, the roller is formed of a number of segments 36, which have a sliding and an impact movement relative to each other and to the interior of the housing. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 4, each segment, of which there may be three or more, has two flat faces 39 and one curved face, the flat face being inclined longitudinally as shown at 40 so that the segments have both a radial and a longitudinal sliding movement. Other forms of segments are described having two convex faces, or two convex and one concave face, the segments preferably interfitting to form a complete cylinder when properly arranged. The housing 4 is formed of two sections 5, 8 widening at their connected ends to form a grinding chamber 33 which is fitted with a cylindrical steel liner 34 and removable conical liners 35. The cylindrical parts of the sections 5, 8 are fitted respectively with spiral ribs or flanges 7, 10 running in opposite directions, the ribs 10 being arranged to feed backwardly into the chamber 33 any large fragments of the material under treatment. A draught or air or steam is maintained through the housing and an outlet pipe 14, whereby dust may be separated from the granular product and carried away through the pipe 14, while the ground material falls through a discharge opening 13. Rotation of the housing 4 is effected by an external wheel 15 gearing with a pinion on a long shaft 17, which is driven by a pulley 21 and is fitted with a second pulley 22 for rotating a further shaft 25 disposed in a feed trough 26. In a modification the housing is formed in three sections, the centre one being cylindrical, and is fitted with two rollers separated by a disc of steel or like material.
