Abstract

287,196. Neeley, G. S., and Watkins, G. Nov. 12, 1926. Incrustation, preventing and removing. - Incrustation in boilers is prevented and removed by applying an alternating current to the feed water before its release into the boiler, and another current of different phase and voltage to the shell of the boiler and water therein. Water is supplied to a. boiler 10 by a feed pipe 15 and distributors 21 which are connected by wires 22 to insulated plugs 24 and thence through the primary 26 of a transformer to the supply mains 27. 'The entering feed water is thus subjected to electrolytic treatment by the alternating current. The transformer secondary 26a is connected to the boiler shell at 30 and to a point 32 which is comparatively cool. The feed water discharge member 20, Fig. 3, consists of two semi-cylindrical parts 20<a>, 34, bolted together and provided with insulating blocks 37 which support the feed pipe 21, and with cross pins 39 which prevent longitudinal movement of the electrode 21. In a modification, a precipitating vessel may be inserted in the feed pipe outside the below the boiler water level, and an outlet pipe the secondary circuit of a transformer. In another modification, earthing of the supply mains is avoided by connecting the two circuits of Fig. 1 to two transformer secondaries.
