Abstract

Borehole apparatus.-An earth-boring drill having roller cutters comprises a bit head in one piece and having a substantially horizontal lower face, and bearings for said cutters with shanks seated in the head and with portions covering the lower face of the head to protect it from wear. As shown, each roller cutter 3 is suspended from a hanger 6r which is centrally divided and provided with a bearing 5w for the cutter which has a groove 24 and an overhanging flange provided with a gate 25 by which the hanger sections may be inserted in the cutter in turn. Each hanger has a, shank formed of an inclined lower portion 6t and a semi-cylindrical upper portion 6 u which are engaged with a correspondingly formed socket in the head, the shanks of the hangers then contacting and forming a channel 6s for flushing fluid. The shoulders 6q of the hangers cover the lower face of the heads. Means such as wedges 22 and screw plugs may be provided to lock the hangers in position. The shanks of the hangers may enter separate sockets in the head, and further, the hangers may be made in one piece ; also the cutters may be simply slipped on to the bearing members of the hangers, being then held in position only by the opposing cutter.
