REAMER FOR WELLS.
My invention relates to reamers of the roller type, such as are employed in well drilling to preserve or to increase the gauge of the hole drilled by the bit.
It is an object of the invention to provide a reamer which is strong and substantial and capable of withstanding hard usage without injury.
It is my aim to so mount the reaming rollers that they will be easy to insert and remove from position in the head o the reamer, and not liable to become loose and be dropped from the head, and lost in the well.
The construction and arrangement of the cutters, and their means of mounting, forms gated block or casting or metal 1, which, as
seen in Fig. 3, is somewhat triangular in cross section with three flattened sides 2, and. with the corners of the triangle rounded at 3, and adapted to form'a mounting for the cutters. The head has an upper shank 4, threaded for attachment to a collar or coupling. Its lower end has a threaded box 5 for attachment to the drill or such pilot as may be used.. There is a central axial channel 6, through the head for flushing fluid.
I contemplate the use of more than one stage of reaming cutters on the head, al though but one'may be used. Two stages are shown in the draw1ng,;the upper cutter being adjacent the upper end, and the lower one spaced downwardly therefrom the desired distance. There are thus two cutters in vertical alignment at each of the three corners of the head.
The head is formed with sockets .7 in the same to receive the cutters 8 which are approximately cylindrical in shape. Cutter pin-receiving sockets 9 are formed in the ends of said recesses remote from the adjacent cutter. The inner ends of the socket 7 have pin receiving openings 10, opening from the recess into a channel or pocket 11, between the cutters.
Said channel 11 is wide enough to receive the heads 12 of the cutter pins 13 and long enough so that the pin may be inserted therefrom into the openings 10, through the cutters 8, and into the recess 9. The heads 12 of the pins 13 are made eccentric to the axis of the said pins and said heads fit within the channel. 11 so that they may not rotate. Washers 14 are employed at each end of each cutter 8 to furnish a bearing surface for the cutter.
The cutter pins 13 are locked from removal by means of a locking block 15 shaped to fit the pocket 11, when the cutter pins are in position, and to bear against the heads of the pins and hold them from longitudinal movement. The blocks 15am held in position by screws 16 extending through the blocks into the reamer head. The screw heads have 'diametrical openings therein to receive cotter pins 17 which fit within small depressions 18 in the block and prevent rotation oi; the screws.
The formation of the cutter pins and the means of locking them in position enable the cutters to be easily and quickly changed when desired and also guard positively against the accidental removal of the cutters during the operation of the reamer. The use of three cutters in each stage provides a three point contact with the wall of the hole tending to steady the tool. The body of the reamer is also held straight within the hole by its elongated shape bearing at both ends against" the walls of the well. The flattened sides of the head allow space in the well for the passage of flushing fluid without difficulty.
' I claim:
1. In a reamer, a head having cutter-receiving recesses aligned longitudinally thereof, and a pocket of shallower depth than said recesses between said recesses, cutter pins adapted to be inserted into said recesses from said pocket, the heads of said pins being eccentric on said pins and adapted to fit said pocket to prevent rotation of said pins, cutters on said pins and means between adjacentpins to hold them from removal.
2. A cutter including a head having separate upper and lower cutter recesses with a pocket in said head between said recesses, cutter pins adapted'to be inserted from said pocket longitudinally through said recesses,
naraseo pocket longitudinally through said recesses, said pins having a hearing at both ends in said head, heads on said pins, within said pocket, cutters on said pins within said recesses, a vsingle block fitting within said pocket to bear against said heads and hold them in position and means to hold said block in said pocket.
