Abstract
286,914. Paul, R., and Grandseigne, R. H. April 29, 1927. Gums, carbohydrate.- Dry, white and purified pectin is obtained from a pectous solution by treating it in several stages with acetone, compressing the pectin jelly precipitated, drying and crushing it. The pectous solution is run from a container 1, together with acetone from a container 7 into a drum 2, where during thorough maceration the precipitated pectin jelly and liquid pass through a pipe 9 to a compressor 10, whence ejected liquid is led off to the vessel 13. The jelly passes on to the drum 12 where it is out up and treated with fresh acetone from a container 8. The jelly, now a bleached fibrous mass, is fed to a second compressor 17 and then through a pipe 19 into the dryer 20, and finally to a crusher 22. Another washing and compression stage may be introduced before the dryer if desired. The acetone liquids from the drum 12 and compressor 17 are led to the vessel 18 whence they are pumped to the container 7 for treating fresh pectous solution, for which purpose they may be reinforced by fresh acetone from the container 5. The vapours from the dryer 20 are led to a condneser 23 and cooler 24 and thence to the vessel 13. The precipitating drum 2 comprises rotating stirrers 31, Figs. 2 and 3, which are fitted with combs 32, propelling vanes 33, and baffles 30. The inlets 28, 29 for pectous solution and acetone are close together in the conical end of the drum. The washing and impregnating drum 12, Figs. 4 and 5, comprises a tangentially arranged inlet 11, swept by revolving cutters 47. Combs 48 and propelling vanes 49 are provided for feeding the jelly against the acetone current towards the outlet 14. The compressors comprise a drum 10, having an inlet 37 and outlet 11 and feeding screw 36, Fig. 6, the pitch of which is gradually reduced in the forward direction. A cone 42 opposes the feed, and is adjusted as to position by a screw and nut 46, 46<1>. Ejected liquid passes through perforations at 40. The dryer, Fig. 7, comprises a drum 20, a steam heating jacket 21 and a rotating shaft 60 carrying combs 62 for cutting up the jelly entering at 19. Propelling vanes 63 force the jelly towards the outlets 57. The entire treatment is effected in closed vessels under reduced pressure to prevent loss of acetone.
