Abstract

Movable - abutment type ; working-fluid supply; valve-gear; packing drums and abutments; bearings, arangement of.-The outwardly-sliding abutment of a rotary engine or the like comprises a number of relatively slidable plates, the inner ends of which are maintained in contact with the periphery of an eccentric cylindrical piston by mechanical means actuated by a rotary part of the engine. The piston P<1>, P<2> have end members P<1> - - p<4>', extending to the casing and rotating in fluid-tight engagement therewith, supported by bearings B, B<1> which also serve as thrust bearings. The abutment plates G<1>, which may each be cut in two pieces with spring rings inserted in a. circular aperture or be cut as shown in Fig. 7, are assembled in a carrier U with their outer ends bearing on a rocking seat J therein; the carrier U slides in a housing on the casing under the action of a rocking lever L controlled by a cam or eccentric K rotating with the piston. An internal combustion engine arrangement is shown comprising two pistons P<1>, P<2> rotating in a single cylindrical casing 1. One piston compresses the charge and transfers it by a valve controlled conduit D to the other piston chamber where it is ignited. To reverse the engine a second valve V<2> in the transfer conduit is brought into action and the first valve V<1> held out of action, and at the same time the connections of the supply and exhaust pipes to the ports E', O<2> are interchanged. The combustion space is varied by screwing in the plugs which contain the valves V<1>, V<2>. The pistons may be arranged at 180‹ in which case each abutment is actuated by the other piston. With a three piston arrangement the third may be used with steam generated by the heat of the exhaust gases or may be used for the further expansion of the combustion products.
