Indicating by trapping and measuring of column of liquid.-The level of liquid in a tank is indicated by trapping and measuring a column of liquid of a height dependent on the depth of liquid. In the simplest form, a cylinder communicating with the tank at the bottom is provided with a piston which, by closing orifices in the cylinder walls, is adapted to trap a body of liquid on its outward movement. The quantity of liquid trapped depends on the liquid level, and on further movement of the piston, is forced into a tube of smaller diameter until it lifts and closes a float valve in that tube. The movement of the piston in the larger tube may thus be comparatively small, and is an indication of the depth of liquid. In another form, a cylinder 47 is slotted at 49 and surrounded by a cylinder 50 which rests on the bottom of the tank. A piston 55 is carried by a rod 60 which is secured to a block 69 sliding over a tube 70. When the piston is raised, it traps a column of liquid extending to the level of the liquid in the tank and raises it until it reaches a valve member 87 which is hollow and open at the bottom so that it acts as a float. A wire 89 is soldered into the valve and projects loosely through the opening 80, terminating in a ring 92 to support the valve. During the rising of the liquid in the tube 70, air escapes through the openings 80 83, until the valve is closed by the liquid. The connection between the piston and the indicating means may comprise a cord 99 terminating in an actuating handle which carries an indicating pointer extending through a slot and moving over a scale.
