Abstract

285,519. Harrison, W. M. Sept. 18, 1926. Anti-dazzle screens.-In an anti-dazzle arrangement of vehicles, a selenium cell 9, Fig. 2, or like light-sensitive cell, is enclosed in a tube or boxlike casing 10 which is provided with an apertured screen 13 and with a lens 12 of such form that the cell 9 is affected principally by the headlamps of approaching vehicles. The casing 10 may also be provided with a concentrating lens 11. The cell 9 is electrically connected so that, when sufficient light falls upon it, an antidazzle screen or like device is drawn into the line of vision of the driver. The cell 9 is adapted to energize a relay winding which moves a contact arm 20, Fig. 6, on to a fixed contact 19 to energize a solenoid 5 or like device. A steadying solenoid 27 is also energized to withdraw a spring- mounted stop 26, Fig. 4, from a recess 24 so as to allow the solenoid 5 to operate the screen. During this movement the stop 26 enters a recess 24', to hold the screen in the extended position, and a spring-contact or slider 28 leaves a stripcontact 25 and engages a strip 25', so that the circuits of the solenoids 5, 27 are broken and no current is consumed. When the cell 9 is no longer affected, the arm 20 returns to a fixed contact 18, the solenoid 27 is again energized, and the stop 26 is withdrawn from the recess 24'. The screen then returns to its normal position by gravity or spring means, the stop 26 enters recess 24 and the contact 28 leaves strip 25<1> to break the circuit of the solenoid 27. ' The recesses 24, 24<1> and the strips 25, 25<1> are arranged on a block 24 which may be made in telescopic or like form so that the range of movement of the screen can be, controlled. An additional.manuallycontrolled switch 30 also may be provided.
