To all whom it may concern:
lBe-it known that l[, CARL FRnDnRIoH GRO- MANN, ,a subject of the Empire of Germany, and resident ofthe borough of Manhattan, in the county of New Yorkand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Illuminating Devices for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
device for vehicles, automobiles or the like.
The organization of the invention is char-. acterized by a casin with a parabolic refleeting surface, to re ect light'rays in parallel directions. The casing is provided with a' removable number or .name plate. A
translucent-glass of the casing has connected vertently. extinguished.
.' 1in thedrawings Figure 1 represents a top theretoa colored glass for adanger signal. An oil lamp. and an electric bulb are located in the casing and means xare pro'vided to energize the bulbfwhen the lamp is inadplan 'view of theinvention-with a portion thereofbroken away and a i partial. section as on the'line 1-, 1 of Fig.'-2;-Fig. 2 shows a front view of Fig. 1 with 'a portion cut I away; Fig.3 is arighthandside view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4- shows an enlarged section as on the line 4, 4 of Fig. .2; Fig. 5 shows an elevation. of a portion of Fig. 1 and section on the line 5, 5 of Fig. 1; Fig 6 represents atop plan view of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 shows a .partial section of Fig. 1 on the line '7, 7.;
Fig.8 represents an enlarged partial section of Fig. 2 on theline- 8,8, and Fig. 9
represents an enlarged detail of some of I the elements shown in Fig. 1.
The invention. is shown with the casing 20, having the bdttom 21, :top 22 and back parabolic wall 23. A door 25 is hinged to the 'front of the casing by' means of the spring hinge 25. The said door has pro-' .vided. therefor the translucent glass 26-.
The frame of the door has built therewith the segmental portion 27 and in the latter and in the lower corner of the said frame is located the colored glass sector '28. A
'frzme 29 is detachably fastened-to the frame of the door 25 bymeans of bolts 30, A stenciled number or name plate 31, with the opening-32 and-numbers 33 bears against the glasses 26 and 28 and is detachably held in osition by means of the frame 29. A
,A 'spring latch 38 for eachkeeper has'one end fastened to the door 25.v
In closing the door the spring latch 38 locks with its keeper 36, and to open the door the operator forces up the plungers. 1 37 by which spring latch 38 is disengaged v I v from its keeper.
This invention relates to an illuminating 1 Tothe outside face. ofthe'wall 23: is fastened a bracket 42 with the arms 43, and the foot 45. By means of the foot 45 the casing '20 can be bolted in proper position on a vehicle. 0n thev bottom .21 of the cas ng are fastened a pairof guides 46in which 1s engaged the bottom plate 47 of the lamp 50. A spring 51 fastened to the bottom 21 bears up against .theyplate 47 to'clarnp the lamp in position. A stop 52 and a spring 53 are also provided for'the lamp to holdit in position. Inthe casing 20 and projecting from the back 23 is shown the electric lamp orbulb 55- A light shade.
or hood 58 is fastened thecasing20. I
Aselenium' cell 60 with the binding posts 61, 62 is fastened to the hood 58. The said to the bottom 21 of cellis protected from the light rays of the bulb 55' by the'hood 58 and is exposed. to the light from the lamp 50. An electromagnet' 65 with the foot 66 is fastened to the bracket 42. The magnet'has the armature 67 which is pivotedon the post 68. A spring 69'has one end-fastened to said armature and the other endthereofis fastened to the foot 66. A'contact postv 70 is supported on a bracket "71 extending from the bracket 42.
The armature 67 and post 70 constitute an 1 7 I Wires 72, 73 for electric current respec-' electric switch.
tivelyv connect the binding posts 61, 62 of the selenium cell and the magnet 65. An electric.
battery 74.is connected to the wire 73.- A.
'wire'75 connects the armature 67 and an electric switch 76. A wire 77 connects'thebulb 55 with the contact post 70. A second 'wire 78 connects. the bulb '55,- with, the battery 80. 4 is in series with the electric bulbycircuit. An' electric be1l81 is'shunted with the bulb circuit. The wire 82 connects the bell 81 and the contact post 70. The wire 83 connects the adjustable resistance 84 and the battery Current flows from the battery 80 The electric battery 80.
Biro to secure y ters Patent and claim is 1- In a device or the. character described- I 81, the adjustable resistance 84, the wire83- and back to the battery .80.
To use the invention the lamp 50 is lighted v .to illuminate the numbers 33 on the 's'tenciled number plate. When the lamp 50 is burning the eflect of the light, renders the seleniumcell 60 conductive to electric current, and the cuit of the electric bulb 55. When the lamp 50 is extinguished, the selenium cell becomeselectromagnet 65 is energized. This draws the armature 66 into contact with the said magnet against thetension of the spring 69,
and no current is flowing through the cir-' a non-conductor of'electric current and deenergizes the electro-magnet 65, which re-v 4 leases the armgture 67 and the. latter in turn makes contact with the contact post 70. This closes the electric bulb circuit, and the bulb "I is lighted and the bell 81 is caused to ring.
Ifwhile the bulb 55 is li hted the bulb filamerit should break, the 11 81 would continue to ring because the bell circuitis still.
complete. When neither the lamp nor the 'bulb arein use the switch 7 6 should beopen.
The switch 76 should be'closedonly after the lamp 50 is lighted.
The invention may however be .used with- I L out the bell 81, by eliminating the wires 82 and-83." a
' The number plate 31 can be easil detached for another number plate. The co 'o'red glass sector 28'is' always in view when either of the lights -in the casing are operative.
Having described; my invention whatI dethe combination, of a casin an electric lamp in the casing, a li ht sha e under the elec-,
tric lamp,.a selenium cell under the light shade, a fuel lamp in the casing in front of the light shade, an electric circuit for the said cell and an electric circuit for the lamp,
.the cell with its circuit energizing the electric lamp when the non-electric lamp is extinguished.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a casing, an oil lamp in the casing, an electric bulb in the casing, a selenium cell-in the casing, a shade for the selenium cell positioned to screen it from the light of the electric bulb, an electromagnet operated by said selenium cell and a switch operated by the electromagnet' to light'the said bulb.
