Abstract

Stand heads.-In a setting and clamping device for scientific instruments &c. comprising a universal joint on which the instrument is mounted and a setting and clamping handle in association with the joint, the universal joint consists of an inverted cup k supporting the instrument and having substantially a line contact with the concave spherical head o of the tripod support. The cup k has a projection l into which passes a revoluble centre m secured to the cradle g carrying the instrument a, the projection l being externally threaded to receive the extremity of the handle p, which passes through the head o. 1'he handle p also carries a washer q adapted to engage the lower surface of the head. The instrument is set by moving the handle to the desired position and is then clamped by screwing the handle on to the projection l. The washer g is smaller in diameter than the cup k so that a slight distortion of the surface o is produced by the clamping movement to increase the grip. A tendency to wipe the surface of the member o to keep it free from grit &c. results from the comparatively small areas of the bearing surfaces of the parts k, o.
