it is also an object of this invention to provide in connection with the usual grinder heed, upon which are mounted a grinding wheel and a pulley by means of which the wheel may herotated, a universally ad uStable valve supporting mechanism for holding the valves in position relative to the grinder, the valve supporting means comprising agraduated table pivotally supported on the base oi the grinder head and having an axis centrally positioned relative to the grinding wheel, and. a carriage mounted upon sa d table and ad ustable in a horizontal plane relative thereto, whereby the valve supported on the carriage for a grinding operation may be adjusted at a suitable angle relative to the face oi'the grinder.
A further object is to provide on the valve supporting carriage, a. longitudinal sdjustable valve holder for adjusting the position of the valve, so that the periphery of the valve to beground may be moved relative to the face of the grinder.
A, further object is to protdde improved means for clampin the valve in position on the holder. 0t er objects may appear as the description progresses.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, one practical embodiment of this. invention showing a novel arrangement of parts and features which I believe to be new in the art and which will be described in detail in the specification hereinafter following:

,A form of grinder head adapted for use in connection with my otherimprovements consists of a base,
or standard 1, having spaced bearings 2, 2, at the top thereof inwhich" n shaft 3 is rotatably held and on whichsheft is e pulley i, positioned between the bearings 2. 2, and adapted to'he driven by means offs belt 5, connected with any suitable drive shaft, and a grinder wheel 6 on one end of said shaft which is removibly held by means of the usual plates 7, 71
()n the base 8, of the' stzindard' l, I provide :1 lug 9, which is positioned in the vertical plane oi the grinder wheel 6, and is adapted to hold a stud 10, on. one end of which stud j is pivotaily' mounted a swinging standard 11, the stud 10 having a. hexagon-head 12 and a nut 13 on the othervend 'by nieens of which the standard 11 may be secured firmly on the lugil.
Standard 11 has a circular flange 14:, formed integral therewith stthe top and said flange may he provided with graduat tions, as at 15, on the periphery thereof for indicating degrees. A carriage is provided for attachment to the flange 14, and includes a cast metal base 1.6, which has a. circular portion 17 at one end adapted to correspond to and to he mounted uponthe flange 14; and held edjustably thereon by meanslof e stiid orcap screw 18, so that the carriage may be bodily adjusted in a horizontal plane on-tlie flange '14 to a desired extent, the'movement thereof being determined by means of the graduations on the flange relative to 'a single line, as shown on the periphery of-the base portion 17. c i

The forward end of shaft 23. carries an arm 25, which may be secured-to the shaft in any suitable manner so as not to turn thereon and said arm is extended upwardly, and the upper end thereof is substantially enlarged and split for a substantial distance and threaded to receive an adjusting screw 26 having a knurled head 27 by means of which the screw may be turned in the end of the arm. The upper end of the arm 25 may be adjusted to its tension on the screw 26, by means of a screw 28, and the center of said screw l3 is in the same horizontal plane as the of the grinder wheel 6.
Adjacent to each of the bearings 20, 20, and between the same, I provide an arm 25 on the shaft 21, which is held immovable on said shaft and in a true vertical position by means of set screws 30, engaging the flattencd portion of the shaft, the upper ends of said arms having yokes 3i thereon, which serve as rests for the valve stems 32. When a valve 33 is in operating position on the yolces, the stems 32 will rest in the yokes and the valve will occupy a position opposite the grinder wheel (5 and between the arm 25 and the adjacent yoke arm 29.
The valve 33 may be clamped firmly in. position by means of the adjusting screw 26, the inner end of which screw is provided with a swivel extension having a ball and socket connection 35 with said screw and a conical point 36 on the opposite extremity thereof adapted to seat in a depression in the valve. It willbc obvious that'as the screw 26 is tightened. the face of the valve 33 will be moved into closer contact with the face of the wheel 6, and thus the grinding of the valve may be etlectivcly regulated the swivel Ill prevents the loose screw 26 when the valve 33 rotated. A crank 2-37 may be provided on the outer end of the valve stem for turning the valve during the grinding operation. A fiat spring 38 attached at its lower end 3- around the shaft 21 and having its upper end resting upon the valve stem to hold the stem resiliently in their supporting yokes.
It will be understood that the normalposition of the. valve 33 and the flange 14, is in alinement with the center of the face of the grinder wheel and that the valve may be mg of the moved over the face of the wheel by moving the carriage bodily about the axis of the standard 11, on the base of the grinder head. Such movement of the valve may in some cases facilitate the grinding of the valve, and
.will also tend to prevent the wear of the riage.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that my invention consists broadly in the provision-of a grinding head having a bodily adjustable carriage for supporting the valve and valve stem in position for grinding, several adjustments being provided for facilitating the grinding operation, and I desire to claim broadly thereon.
What I claim is:
l. A valve grinding mechanism comprising a valve cutting element, a carriage for supporting a valve in position for cutting, a valve carried thereby, an adjusting screw for moving said valve longitudinally of said carriage, and a swivel on the. end of said screw for engagement with said 'valve, whereby said valve may be held against the face of the grinding element.
2. A valve grinding mechanism comprising a grinding head, a grinding element thereon, a pivoted standard attached to said grinding head, a carriage pivotally held on said standard and adapted to be'ad'usted in a horizontal plane for positioning t e object to be ground, a valve holder longitudinally adjustable on said carriage, a valve and stem being adapted to be rotatably held in said holder for contact with said grinding element, and a tension element carried on said carriage and adapted to press againstjisaid valve stem for yieldably holding said valve and stem'in working position.
3. A universal valve grinding mechanism including a grindim elementand a carriage adjustable relative thereto, valve holder on said carriage having a longitudinally adjustable rod with. yokes thereon for holding a valve to be ground, being adapted to hold a valve and stem, and means held on said A red and engaging said valve stem for resiliently holding said valve in position for grinding.
