Abstract

284,778. Seligman, R. Nov. 4, 1926. Pickling. - In a process for removing the incrustations formed on metallic surfaces which are in contact with hot milk, the surfaces are treated with an acid containing casein or gelatine, the latter acting as a protective agent to prevent or minimize the action of the acid upon the metallic surface itself. The acid may be a weak solution of medicinal ortho-phosphoric acid, and in an example the solution used contains 2 parts of ortho-phosphoric acid, 1 part of casein and 97 parts of water. The solution is heated to a temperature of 85‹-100‹ C. and may be circulated rapidly over or through the surface of the article by means of a, pump, or the article may be immersed in a bath of the solution which is kept in active circulation.
