Rammers.-A portable apparatus for ramming roads, of the kind in which the rammer 6 is raised by power and released to fall by its own weight, has an inertia lever 21 on the rammer which, on impact, strikes a rod 13 to cause the engagement of a friction drive 8, 9 to raise the hammer automatically. The rod 13 is connected by a link 12 to an eccentric bush carrying the friction wheel 8, which is retained in the position shown by a catch, 18 on the rod 13. When the inertia lever strikes the rod 13, the catch 18 is released and the rod drops, thereby moving the wheel 8 into driving engagement with the rammer spindle 7. The rammer is released at a height determined by a lever 17 adjustable between pins 15 on the rod 13, the lever and rod being raised by a projection 20 on the rammer- The friction wheels 8, 9 are continuously driven from an engine on the vehicle frame, which is also adapted to drive the road wheels in either direction.
