Abstract

392,050. Railway barriers. BYRNE, E. L. W., 329, High Holborn, London.- (Grade Crossing Guard Corporation ; 834, Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A.) Sept. 19, 1932, No. 26011. [Class 104 (ii).] A barrier for crossing roads or a railway lever crossing comprises bumper members 17 located in line across the road and housed below the road surface in a channel-iron frame and adapted to be raised above the road surface through a resilient transmission at a varying rate determined by an oil dashpot device. The bumpers are pivotally mounted on resilient hinge members 20 which yield to allow the bumpers to engage abutment bars 15 and brackets 22 on the frame when a load passes. To raise the bumpers an electric motor 23, Fig. 3, is energized, as by an approaching train at a sufficiently distant contact, to drive through worm gearing 28 a shaft 29 provided with a crank 30 and linkage 33 whereby a shaft 34 is moved to stress a torsion spring 41 which acting on the hub 46 with crank 45 raises the bumper through the linkage 56. The weight of the bumper is balanced by a torsion spring 54 also acting on the hub 46. The bumper rises quickly, exposing warning lamps, until the lost-motion in. the connection 68 to the dash-pot 66 is taken up ; thereafter the bumper rises slowly until the descending dashpot piston, Fig. 11, uncovers a second throttle 86 whereupon the bumper accelerates to its full position. Load due to impact of a vehicle would be taken up by the lug 21x engaging the top flange of the frame member 14. The stress on the balancing spring 54 can be adjusted and retained by a pawl and ratchet device 51.
