Tamping-machines. - Relates to coal and like ramming-machines with two rammers arranged side by side, and consists in a device whereby both rammers may be lifted simultaneously by the application to the driving-shaft of a uniform torque sufficient to raise one rammer only. In the form shown, the gripper-box f, which grips both rammers e at the bottom and releases them at the top, of its stroke, is guided along them by rollers g, and is pivoted at j, above the centre of gravity, to a connecting-rod h, suspended from one arm m of a lever i turning on a fixed pivot p; the other arm o, of which the weight is sufficient to counterbalance the weight of one rammer, is slotted to receive the crank-pins l on the wheel k driven by a motor. The gripping-devices comprise spring-actuated bolts u, Fig. 3, carrying rollers 2, adapted to engage noses v on bars r, which are capable of sliding vertically through the bolts u. Recesses 4 are provided on the rammer rods to receive the bolts, but the pitch of these recesses is different from the pitch of the bolts, so that only one bolt can engage with its recess, the remaining bolts exerting a frictional grip on the rammers. Just before the gripper-box reaches the top of its stroke, the bar r strikes a fixed stop, causing the noses to retract the bolts and release the rammers; impact of the bar with a second stop, near the bottom of the stroke, causes it to release the bolts, which then grip the rammers. The machine is mounted on wheels n and is adapted to receive an intermittent motion to allow it to ram fresh material.
