Abstract
284,502. Kusse, F. C., and Kusse, F. C. April 11, 1927. Machines supported by rotary wing systems; aeroplanes; propelling.-In an aircraft of the kind provided with a tractor propeller and with a rotary wing system driven by screws mounted upon it, the screws rotate in a plane including the axis of rotation of the wing system. The screws are also mounted upon horizontal arms extending from the centre of the wing system, and rotate in planes forming acute angles with the longitudinal axis of the arms. In the arrangement described, the helically-arranged wings 19 are mounted upon the hub 18 of a tube 17 journaled in bearings in a pedestal 16 carried by the fuselage 10. Two propellers 27, 28 are mounted on stub shafts journaled in the ends of hollow arms 25, 26 extending radially from the tube 17. The propellers are driven in opposite directions through a shaft 22 which passes through the tube 17 and is connected through bevel gears 30 - - 32 to shafts 33, 34 passing through the arms 25, 26 and driving the propellers through further bevel gears. The wings 19 are braced by rods 41, 42 connected to a flange 43 on the tube 17, and by rods 44, 45 connected to the arms 25, 26.
