Abstract

284,453. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Hassler, E. H. H. Jan. 14, 1927. Lubricant conveyed by mechanical means.-In a ball or roller bearing, oil is raised in excess from a reservoir 12 in the housing 7 to an upper reservoir 17, Figs. 1, 3, in an end cap 11 by a loose ring 8 accommodated in a slot 21 in the cap 11 so as to encircle the shaft 3 or a sleeve 9 fixed thereon. The oil is scraped from the ring by vertical ribs 13, 14 in the slot 21 and is directed by lips 15. 16 into the reservoir 17, surplus oil overflowing therefrom through holes 18, Oil passes from the reservoir 17 through restricted openings 19 located above the bottom and flows in a small stream across the lower part of the bearing, the depth of the stream being determined by a lip 20 in the other end cap 10. Oil emerging from the bearing into the upper part of the cap 10 collects on two white-enamelled sloping surfaces 24, down which it flows and drops to the reservoir 12, the now along the surfaces 24 being visible through inspection holes 25, 38 in the cap 10 and housing 7 respectively. In the modification shown in Figs. 5, 6, the ring 8 is replaced by a roller 27 pressed by a spring arm against the sleeve 9 or shaft. The roller is in the form of a, double cone coacting with conical rollers on the sleeve or shaft, a recess being left between the collars so that oil lifted bv the roller is thrown into the recess and is thrown or scraped off the edges of the collars on to the walls of the cap 11, whence it gravitates into two side reservoirs 29, 30 in the cap, which reservoirs have overflow holes 33, 34. Restricted passages 31, 32 conduct oil from the reservoirs to a space 35 from which it flows across the bearing.
