Abstract
283,265. Kawai, K. Oct. 5, 1926. Medicines for internal use. - A concentrate of cod-liver oil rich in vitamin A is prepared by saponifying 50-75 per cent of the saponifiable portion of ordinary cod-liver oil and then separating the unsaponified oil, containing vitamin A and other effective ingredients, from the saponified matter. The oil may be saponified by adding caustic soda and stirring for about 2 hours at a temperature below 60‹ C. Separation of the saponified and unsaponified matters may be effected by allowing the mass to stand, when the saponified matter sinks to the bottom; the oil at the top is removed, saponified matter remaining therein is extracted bv washing &c., and the oil is then further refined in a centrifugal separating apparatus. Or milk of lime may be added and the mass heated slightly, steam being introduced to prevent oxidation, and, after cooling, the calcium soap is separated from the mass by a filter press or a centrifugal apparatus and then by allowing the mass to stand etc.; or milk of lime and alcohol may be added to the cod-liver oil to effect the saponification.
