Centreless grinding.-In a centreless grinding- machine in which the rollers 1 to be ground are located or fed axially between a grinding wheel 3 and a regulating-wheel 2 and are supported on a rest, in order to avoid the production of rollers of polygonal cross-section, or to produce rollers having a predetermined polygonal section, the rest 4 supports the work at at least two points and is rockable about a knife edge, bearings or an edge of part cylindrical form engaging a groove of larger radius of curvature. By variation of the angles a, #, y, #, Fig. 3<a>, the required form of roller is obtained, and by arranging the axes of the several parts to converge to a point, conical or pyramidal articles may be produced; a stop is provided in this case at the largo end of the article. The contact edges of the rest 4 may be provided with rollers, driven or idle; the regulating-wheel may be mounted on the rest and a stationary guide replace the wheel 2. As shown in Fig. 5, each limb of the rest, or one limb only, may carry a rocking rest to give additional supports for the work.
