Partitioned boxes; lids; samples of contents, viewing.-Cigarettes are packed in an ordinary box in one or more closed packages while one or a few of the cigarettes are inserted between or along the side of the closed packages so as to be freely visible after the lid of the box has been opened and any protective sheets have been removed without there being any need to open the closed packages. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the box a contains twenty-five cigarettes, each of the closed packages d'; e, containing twelve cigarettes, while one cigarette f is supported between the packages d, e on a folded strip g so as to be loose for inspection; the strip g may be fixed or removable and its sides may be springy and it may be formed with lateral extensions lying along the bottom of the box. The lid c, of the box may, be hinged or sliding and, as shown, may be hinged to the base of the box by the back b. Each of the packages i, Fig. 6, may have a flexible cover h which hinges towards the back of the enclosing box and is formed with a tongue k lying against such back. When the cover c of the box is opened and the back b bent slightly back, the tongue k may be grasped to open the package and remove its cover. In another form of package the tongue is arranged to lie on the upper face thereof in the closed position of the box.
