Abstract

282,571. Levy, L. Feb. 9, 1927. Drip retaining and separating devices.-Drips of liquid caught in a gutter arranged around the pouring lip or spout of a vessel are continuously returned to the interior of the vessel by capillary action assisted in some cases by gravity. The construction shown in Fig. 7, Which makes use of both capillarity and gravity comprises an annular stopper A of cork &c., adapted to fit the neck of a bottle or the like, a tubular part B, preferably of metal, formed with a lip a and a lower internal rim b, and a second parttubular portion C having a spout c and slotted along the side opposite to the spout at d, Fig. 4; the part C is formed with two pressed-in wing portions e<1>, e<2>. To facilitate assembly a punchmark f is made in parts B and C. The operation is as follows : Liquid poured from the vessel flows out by the spout c; the rim b prevents any liquid entering the annular space between parts B, C. Any part of the liquid meeting the wings e<1>, e<2>, is deflected towards the spout c. When pouring ceases drops formed beneath the spout c descend along the outside of the part C until they reach the annular space, whereupon surface tension causes the liquid to spread ; it emerges from the annular space by way of the slot d and passes over the rim b to return to the vessel. The device may be provided with a suitable closure cap such as D, Fig. 14, which may be formed with a plug q adapted to fit within the part C, and may be permanently associated with the vessel. Fig. 17 shows a telescopic form of the device in the extended position, for pouring. Drops formed at c collect in the gutter G and can re-enter the vessel via the point C<1>2 when the pouring member is lowered. In Fig. 18, a hooked rod K provided' on the screwed closure cap engages under a pin T to withdraw the slidable pourer part for use. Fig. 25 shows a form in which the slidable pourer C is integral with the closure, the rim of which has a bayonet connection with the outer member. Liquid is poured through an aperture c<3> in the part C, the aperture being completely covered when the pourer is lowered.
