282,546. Barr, J. H., and Barr-Morse Corporation. Nov. 27, 1926. Type-lever actions.-An action comprises longi. tudinally movable driving- members mounted on the framework and having arms engaging action - levers mounted on a shift-segment supporting the type-levers, the arms being graded upwards in length from the centre to the sides of the system and being parallel to the shift plane of the segment; to facilitate assembling, disconnectible mountings and connections are provided for various parts of the action. In the action shown in Figs. 1 and 2, longitudinally movable driving-members 39, arranged in parallel vertical planes, are mounted at the front on key-actuated parallel levers 36 and are formed at the rear with slots 40 engaging a guide-rod 41, the levers and guidepin being mounted on the framework. The driving-members are each formed with an inclined arm 42 arranged parallel to the shift plane of an inclined segment 1 supporting the type-levers 10, the arm having a slot 43 engaging a barrel-pin 44 on an action-lever 29 mounted on a bracket 2 secured to the segment. The arms 42 are graded upwards in length from the centre to the sides of the system, and the slots 43 are preferably curved slightly to correspond to the path of the segment, the segment having shift mounting on a pivoted bail 4 and a lever 5. The levers 36 are pivoted on a rod 35 carried by a comb 33 formed by folding a plate on a line crossing a series of slots therein, an enlargement for rereceiving the rod being formed at the folding line. Key-stems 45 having keys 52 are pivoted to the levers 36 and to levers 48 connected to returning- springs 50. The levers 29 are arranged radially and are formed at the front with bends carrying the pins 44, the bends being approximately parallel to the arms 42. To facilitate movement, the bends of the outer levers are slightly twisted, the twist decreasing towards the centre of the system. The levers 29 have pins 31 engaging slots 32 is radial levers 20 mounted on the bracket 2 and connected by links 25 to the type-levers. The pins normally engage bends 32<a> at the ends of the slots, the arrangement providing an easy start for the type-levers, and preventing rebound of the type-levers from a cushion 16 on the bracket 2. To permit close arrangement of the typelevers, the levers 20 are arranged in the same planes as the type-levers, and the levers 29 and links 25 are arranged in the same planes. The bracket 2 is provided with a spring comb 61 adapted to engage the levers 29 immediately before the end of the return stroke. The segment and bracket and the parts of the action thereon can be detached as a unit. When the segment is shifted, the pins 44 travel along the slots 43, the stroke of the keys 52 remaining the same in either the normal or the shift position of the segment. The following disconnectible mountings and connections are provided for various parts of the action :-The levers 20 are pivoted on arcuate plate 17 formed with a bead 18, Fig. 5, and apertures 19 engaging open bearing-apertures 21 in the levers. When the levers are placed at right-angles to the plate they can be attached or detached by a lateral movement. To permit attachment or detachment of individual levers without disturbing the others, the bead may be formed with transverse grooves 23. The bead may be arranged symmetrically to the plate in which case grooves 23 are formed in the top and bottom of the bead. The punches for forming the apertures 19 may be arranged to shear off a small part of the bead so as to avoid subsequent trueing of the bead to forn a cylindrical bearing. Each link 25, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a pin 26 passing through a bearing aperture in the type-lever and having a lug for preventing lateral movement. The bearing-aperture has a slot through which the lug can pass when the typelever is attached or removed. The type-levers have L-shaped slots 13 engaging a pivot-wire 11, the arrangement permitting detachment of any type-lever when in printing position. The keystems 45 have pins 46, Fig. 1 which enter apertures in the levers 36 and are detachably retained by engagement of grooves therein with key-hole slots 54 in plates 53 pivoted on the rod 35.
