Abstract

282,258. Woodall-Duckham (1920). Ltd., Wellington, S. N., and Scott, A. April 5, 1927. Density separators.-Dust is extracted from a current of air, and graded, by passing the current through a cyclone separator to separate the coarser particles and then through one or more baffle chambers in which the finer particles are deposited. A collecting cone b forms the lower end of the cyclone casing a and an axial exit pipe c extends from this cone through the upper cover into the vessel e provided with conical baffle plate f. A pipe g from the top .of the vessel e is connected to a suction fan. A helical blade d surrounds the pipe c, there being a slight clearance between the blade and the casing. The dust laden gas is collected from the chamber o and passed through the pipe h, its collection and passage being assisted, if desired, by the injection of steam or air through the inlet p. The stream from the pipe h enters the casing a tangentially and passes down the helical blade while the coarse particles are separated. The stream then passes up the pipe c to the separator e where the finer particles are deposited. Vertical pipes k are connected to an annular blast pipe i surrounding the cyclone a and carry nozzles l which direct air or steam on to the blade d to cause the dust to collect in the cone b. A similar nazzle m in the separator e directs a blast to carry the collected dust through the opening n in the pipe c. Additional separators similar to the separator e may be superposed on the apparatus.
