Abstract

344,421. Centrifugal gas cleaners. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(International Precipitation Co. ; 1016, West 9th Street, Los Angeles, U.S.A.) Nov. 28, 1929, No. 36548. [Class 23.] Density separators, cooling and heating.-Dust is removed from gas during its passage through a number of cyclone separators arranged between a common gas entrance chamber and a common dust collecting chamber. Each separator is of circular cross section and has a restricted dust outlet leading to the collecting chamber and the length of the separator is between 3¢ and 7 times the largest diameter. Each separator 3 consists of a cylindrical part 11 with a lower conical part 12, and an upper part having an entry 17 which is formed by the addition of a curved deflecting plate 14, Fig. 3, so that the gas enters tangentially. In a modification the whole body part may be of conical form. The upper part is provided with a tapering outlet pipe 24 for the clean gas. The dust laden gas passes into the two branches 4a of the inlet flue 4, Fig. 5, and then enters the tangential inlets 17 of the separators. The dust is separated and drops through the openings 13 into the settling chamber 2, from which it may be removed when the valve 21 is opened. The clean gas passes upwards through the outlet 24 to the discharge flue 5. Suitable ratios of sizes of the various parts are given in the Specification. The fan for producing the flow of gas may be arranged to discharge through the separating apparatus, or to draw gas through it. Where it is desired to effect temperature variations the apparatus is enclosed in a casing 31, Fig. 7, so that heating or cooling medium can be admitted by the pipe 28 and withdrawn by the pipe 29. In a modified construction two discharge flues may be arranged at the sides of a central inlet flue. In the further modification shown in Fig. 13, the separating apparatus is enclosed in a casing with a gas inlet 47 in its lower part. The entering gas travels upwards and round the separators 3 to reach their inlets, and the apparatus is therefore kept at a uniform temperature ; condensation and deposition of moisture in the separators is therefore avoided. Some dust may be deposited in the casing itself, and this is discharged through outlets 53 in the bottom plate. The clean gas is discharged through the outiet 51. In another modification the separators are arranged in a circle with their tangential inlets arranged round an inlet header 55, Fig. 15, provided with a conical deflector plate 56. The upper ends of the separators are secured to a plate 59 held up by a hinge 61 and a catch 64. The dust outlets extend through a plate 66 into a hopper 67 which is held up by a hinge 68 and a catch 69. In this form the parts are easily accessible for cleaning. The gas is passed through the apparatus by a fan 72 and the clean gas passes out by the pipe 74. To enable sufficient gas to pass into the dust collector to ensure the separation of all the dust, a conical gas outlet member 75 extends above the collecting hopper 67 and is connected by a pipe 76 to the fan inlet. A valve 77 in this pipe controls the flow.
