Abstract

Rearing-appliances. - A fireless brooder comprises a lower rectangular wooden framework provided with a detachable weather-boarded roof portion 2 and fitted with a floor of small meshed wire netting 10 supported by a cross batten 11. An adjustable chicken chamber is formed by a vertical wire mesh ring 12, carried on the floor 10 and having an'entrance 13 by which it communicates with an opening in the outer frame adapted to be closed by a hinged door 23. A loop 15 is provided in the wire mesh 12 at the rear of the ring, this looped portion providing for adjustment of the ring according to the number of chickens in the brooder. Hay is packed be. tween the ring and the outer walls. Hay is also placed within the ring so that the backs of the chickens will touch the bottom of a canvas tray 18. Hair felt layers 20, interspaced by sheets of canvas, are placed centrally on the canvas tray. The tray may be turned upside down or raised to give extra headroom. Ventilation apertures are provided and a window of glass known under the registered Trade Mark " Vita " is fitted at the back of the brooder. A thermometer passes into the brooder through a slot 24. The brooder is warmed initially by inserting a hot water bottle or similar device before the chickens are put in.
