Abstract
238,624. Valley Poultry Farm, Ltd., and Boyden, H. H. May 24, 1924. Poultry houses; rearing-appliances.-A perching house is converted into a brooder or rearer by the insertion of a removable vertical panel extending the whole width of the house bat only part of the height, the compartment thus formed being furnished with heating-apparatus and with a removable cover provided with ventilating means and a transparent inspection window. The house may be made of metal and wood compoboarding and the brooding or rearing compartment lined with asbestos-cement composition. The removable panel consists of a sliding door 8 of non-conducting material provided with a small exit opening which is closed by a swivelling metal cover having a grip formed by turning back one corner of it. Hinged to the loose metal cover 9 is an arched top 13 provided with ventilation holes 14 and having secured to it a perforated baffle plate 15 and a heat deflector plate 18, both made of asbestos cement. In the cover 9 is a glass plate 12, and above it is a hinged window or door 11. A tube 20 containing a thermometer is secured in the cover 9 by means of a cork or a shaped piece of wood. Within the brooding chamber is a lamp 10. The hinged end 4 of the poultry house is provided with an upper window 26 covered with wire gauze and a lower aperture 27 covered by a gauze flap 28 adapted to be fastened down or up by turn-buttons 30, 31. A sliding shutter 32 carries a swivelling stirrup 34 having a number of cross-bars to engage a knob 36. When the shutter 32 is in its lowest position with a bent-over part 37 resting on a stop 38 the swivelling stirrup engages a knob 39 on a lower shutter 33. The sides of the poultry house may each be provided with an inspection window and with a small closable opening for the use of the young chickens. The opening is closed by a door hinged at the bottom and adapted to form a bridge or ladder, being provided with steps or cross-pieces. Sheet-metal brackets 44 are provided to receive perches.
