Disinfecting.-Apparatus for sterilizing instruments in surgical operating rooms comprises sterilizing vessels mounted on a bench and having only their interiors and lids exposed to the atmosphere of the room, the remainder of the vessels being located, together with heating appliances, in a chamber isolated from the operating room. Means are provided for preventing air or moisture passing between the chamber and sterilizing room. As shown, sterilizing receptacles 20 are mounted in an alcove 2, the greater portion of the vessels 20, together with hot and cold sterile water tanks 40, 41 and pipes therefor, being located in the chamber 39 behind the sterilizing room. A forced current of warm air is passed across the ceiling 7 of the alcove for taking off vapour. The holes in the bench for the sterilizing receptacles are provided with curbs 21 for accommodating flanges 22 on the vessels 20 which are suspended out of contact with the side of the bench. The vessels are provided with hook members 24 and guides 25 which co-operate to receive cross-bar pieces 26 formed integral with or separately from the lids 23. The members 26 have extensions 30 which overlap the sides of the hooks and may be moved clear thereof in one position in which, by lateral displacement, the lids may be removed for cleaning. Each vessel is provided with a steam pad or coil 43 the cock 44 in the steam supply pipe 54 being controlled from the bench by extension handles 45. The condensate of steam supplied to the pads or coils drains through steam traps 46 and is fed to the hot water tank 40.
