Abstract
281,284. Compagnie Franþaise pour l'Exploitation des ProcÚdÚs Thomson-Houston. Nov. 25, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Rotary converters and transformers.-An electrical converting apparatus called in the Specification a " metadyne " comprises an armature with multiple brushes arranged so as to transform a current of constant voltage to a current of constant intensity or into " Several currents correlated among each other by a linear function of constant co-efficients." Fig. 3 shows the arrangement in a 3-brush machine in which the two brushes a, a<1> have a " commutation axis " A, A<1> at right-angles to the brush line and the single brush b has a similar axis B, B<1>. Such a machine may be connected across a high-pressure supply, Fig. 4, and feeds constant current of low pressure to motors M. The brushes a<1>, b may, alternatively, charge a battery while the brushes a, a<1> feed motors at a higher voltage. In a 3- brush machine, two of the brushes may be shortcircuited and connected to one pole of a constant pressure supply while the third is connected to the other pole through the apparatus fed by the machine. Fig. 8 shows a form applicable for driving series traction motors M in which the brushes a, b are short-circuited through a " stabilizing " stator winding and the third brush c is connected to the motors through another " stabilizing " winding. A " variation stator winding " V produces fluxes in the same direction as that of the current of the brush c and a regulating stator winding R is fed with a current " which is a function of the speed of the metadyne." Fig. 9 shows a six-brush machine having short-circuited brushes a, b and four other brushes c - - f, connected to loads P, P<1>, Q, Q<1> on a 3-wire network at constant voltages. The Specification sets forth the equations upon which the invention is based and states in connection with Fig. 9 that " a certain linear function of the currents flowing from the brushes c - - f remains equal to the constant L." The coefficients of this linear function depend on the construction of the machine and the relative position of the brushes. The magnitude of the constant may be modified by regulating the action of the stator windings.
