Abstract
280,582. Soc. Anon. des Manufactures des Glaces et Produits Chimiques de St.-Gobain, Ghauny, et Cirey. Nov. 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Rolling.- Relates to the method of making sheet glass in which a stream of molten glass, issuing from a horizontal slot in the wall of a tank or forehearth, flows into the pass between parallel rollers and is formed into a continuous strip. According to the invention, the glass in the forehearth where it flows through the slot is maintained at a temperature above that at which devitrification is liable to occur, and the issuing glass is cooled rapidly, to a temperature suitable for the rolling operation, by more or less prolonged contact with the air and with walls which are more or less conducting. This cooling is preferably effected by causing the issuing glass to pass into an exterior reservoir G formed by a floor slab H and side walls, as described in Specification 253,866, its floor forming a prolongation of the bottom lip of the slot B. Cover strips J rest on the side walls and project an adjustable distance over the surface of the glass to maintain the margins of the stream at a temperature equal to or above that of the central portion. A block O, placed in contact with the slab H, is formed with a cavity P to which a gas flame is supplied to regulate the temperature of the slab H. Specifications 241,206 and 241,207 are referred to.
