Abstract

240,448. Libbey-Owens Sheet Glass Co., (Assignees of Blair, J. C.). Sept. 24, 1924, [Convention date]. Drawing.-A device for maintaining the width of the sheet in a continuous drawing-process consists of a pair of refractory blocks, partly submerged in the mass of glass, having spaced lips forming a slot through which the edges of the sheet are drawn. The sheet 22, Figs. 1 and 2, is drawn upwards from a mass of metal 21 contained in a draw pot 20, and the sheet may continue to move vertically, or it may pass around a bending- roller as in the Colburn process. At each side of the pot is supported a refractory block 24 provided with a pair of spaced lips 25, and these lips are curved downwardly so that their lower ends are submerged in the molten glass. The space between the lips forms a slot 26 through which the edges of the sheet pass. The tendency of the glass to adhere to the blocks create a dragging- action which retards the movement of the edges of the sheet and maintains its width. The blocks 24 may have lips of various shapes, and may be so mounted that the dragging-action can be controlled. In the construction shown, the blocks are supported by a bracket 32 keyed to a shaft 33 which can be turned by a worm 41 and segmental gear 37. Thus the extent to which the lips are submerged in the glass can be adjusted by turning the worm shaft 38. In a modification, shown in plan in Fig. 17, separate refractory shoes or blocks 42 are arranged on both sides of each edge of the sheet. The blocks can be adjusted about their vertical axes, and may be moved up or down to regulate the depth to which they dip into the glass. Water-coolers mounted on the blocks keep the device at the required temperature, and also serve to cool the edge portions of the sheet as they leave the blocks. Specifications 114,977 and 184,990 are referred to.
