Pulp, preparation of; pulp, adding special substances to.-Waterproof paper or pasteboard is produced by disintegrating a paper furnish of waste wax paper, dispersing the wax constituent, fixing the dispersed material thereon and running off on a paper machine. The waste wax paper, together if desired, with sulphite fibre, mixed papers or other paper stock, is heated to soften or melt the wax and is then beaten, rosin or other waterproofiing material being added if desired. Sodium silicate, preferably heated, is then added to disperse the waterproofing material, the furnish cooled and alum added to produce a slightly acid reaction and fix the waterproofing material on the fibres. In one example 70 parts of waste paraffin paper and 30 parts of other fibre are placed in a beater, heated to about 170‹ F and beaten for half-an-hour. 5 to 20 pa.rts of rosin are added and disseminated through the furnish and sufficient sodium silicate of about 42‹ BÚ at 210‹ F. added to produce the desired dispersion. After beating for about halfan-hour water is added to cool the furnish to 120‹ F., then 30 to 40 per cent of alum added tn produce a slightly acid reaction and the furnish run off on a paper machine having dryers and calender rolls maintained above the temperature of the waterproofing material.
