Abstract

280,033. Reed, C. E. Nov. 9, 1926. Drills.-In a rotary drill bit, particularly a flat fish-tail bit, the cutter 8 is secured in the body 1 by means of wedges 6 which pass through elongated slots in the body and the shank 7 of the cutter and are forced inwards by plugs 5 screwing in the body. The shank has a parallel and a tapered portion for fitting a socket in the body and the cutter has upwardly tapering sides 9 which engage a tapered recess 10 in the body to transmit the driving torque. The body and cutter are both of substantially flat cross-section, but the former has a central enlarged portion 1<a>. The usual passages 12 for fluid circulation are provided and a slot 13 provides for ejection of the cutter.
