Machines using continuous wire. - In a staple-hingeing machine of the kind having two stapling heads arranged in V-formation to form and drive two interlocking staples, the boards to be hinged are clamped in superposed position on a horizontal work-table with their edges lying in continuity in a common vertical plane. The stapling heads A, B are operated by arms 14, 15 on a rock-shaft 13 operated from the main shaft 8. Wire is fed to the heads from spools 18, 19 by feeding devices each comprising rolls 24, 25, staple-lengths being cut off by cutting devices 16 operated intermittently by star or other shaped heads 31 on two spindles operated from the main shaft by toothed quadrants and ratchet wheels. The operations are so timed that one stapling head is driving its staple while the other is forming a staple ready for driving. Each stapling head, Fig. 5, includes a fixed throat 35 with wire-ways 37 and a movable guide 38 held against the throat by a spring and also formed with wire-ways 37. The staple wire is fed into a horizontal slot 39 between the throat and guide. A driver 41 has a nose 45 working in the throat 35. The driver is first raised by its slide 42 and arm 14, so that the nose draws the wire into the guide 38, so shaping the staple, the guide meanwhile rising against the pressure of its spring and of a spring plunger 50. The nose 45 is then disengaged by means of a roll 47 and cam-groove 48, allowing the guide 38 and staple to descend. Upon descent of the driver the nose is again positioned behind the guide 38, ready for driving the staple. The units to be hinged are clamped upon an adjustable table 4 by a clamping bar 7 operated by heart-shaped cams so that it first clamps the unit, then exercises a steadily increasing pressure, and then a decreasing pressure.
