Resins.-A solid resin is made from the semifluid resin extracted from crude gutta-percha or balata, by treating it with air at an elevated temperature to effect oxidation. A small proportion of siccative may be present, and about ¢ per cent of lime may be added before oxidation to neutralize free acids. The semi-fluid resin is usually extracted from the balata &c. by solvent action, and the process may be effected in an oxidizer of known type, comprising a horizontal cylinder having an agitator, and through which air is blown. The cylinder is steam jacketed. A charge of semi-fluid resin is introduced, with the' optional addition of 1 per cent of manganese resinabe, and heated to 80‹ C. Air is blown in and the agitator started. The temperature is raised to 100‹ C. after 4 hours and after 10 hours the' charge is run out, when it solidifies to an ambercoloured brittle resin.
