Abstract
278,818. Gill, H. A., (U. S. Farm Feed Corporation). July 20, 1926. Food for animals.-Farm roughage, e.g. hay, straw, clover, or corn stalks, is subjected in the presence of moisture to an accelerated fermentation and other reactions to increase the palatability and digestibility. ' The material is commonly first dried, and kept dry up to the time of treatment, just before it is required for food. The ferments may be those inherent in the material, or others, such as yeast or preferably malt. The material is preferably cut into short lengths. To accelerate the reactions, the ferments may be stimulated or supplemented by means of materials such as magnesia, lime, salt, and sulphur. The mass may be compressed, or treated with a current of'air. Calcium acid phosphate, ground rock phosphate, or ground bone meal may be added, and may be utilized as a vehicle for benzaldehyde serving as a flavouring and anti. septic agent.
