Abstract

278,814. Courtaulds, Ltd., and Lewis, F. D. July 19, 1926. Apparatus for making filaments; cellulose acetates, processes for making filaments from.- When dry-spinning cellulose acetate &c. artificial threads &c., the solution at the spinning nozzle the air in the neighbourhood of the nozzle are maintained at the same temperature by subjecting both the solution and the air to the same heat. Thus, the spinning solution may be passed through a pipe which traverses the length of the spinning chamber, or it may be led through a coiled or spiral pipe adjacent to the spinning nozzle, or the solution-supply pipe may pass through the hot water jacket of the chamber or through a vessel into which the hot water from the jacket, flows. By equalising the temperature of the solution and the air in this way it is possible to control the lustre of the filaments, and also their cross-section so as to produce at will scintillating or non-scintillating threads. Threads of the highest lustre and free from glitter are obtained by employing a common temperature approaching the highest temperature compatible with continuous spinning; lowering the temperature decreases the lustre and later leads to the production of threads showing the effect of glitter. The maximum common temperature depends on the other factors; if the concentration of the spinning solution is increased or a solvent of lower boiling point is employed, the temperature has to be lowered; on the other hand, if the air leaving the chamber contains a higher proportion of solvent vapours, the temperature has to be increased.
