Abstract

277,419. Lamplough, F., and Hodgson, A. E. June 15, 1926. Mineral and tar oils, extracting etc.; liquid f u e l. - Finely-divided coal is intimately mixed with a heavy mineral oil, such as fuel oil having an asphaltic base, and the mixture is heated to 400- 500‹ C. under pressure to prevent vaporization. The coal goes into solution and the undissolved ash may be separated by settling. The liquid product may be used as fuel or distilled for the separation of hydrocarbons. The light fractions may be hydrogenated to produce motor spirit. Coal, freed from ash by a froth flotation process or otherwise, is dried and ground with heavy oil in a mill 10. The mixture is forced by a pump 12 through a heating coil 13 into a settling-chamber 18. The mixture may be recirculated through a pipe 14 to the pump and heating coil. A pressure of 100-600 lb. per sq. in. in the heater and about 150 lb. in the chamber 18 may be used. Ash settles in the chamber 18 and the liquid may be decanted. The liquid may be fractionally distilled after the discharge or a distillation is effected by opening a valve 19 and admitting the vapours to a fractional condensation apparatus such as is described in Specification 216,922, [Class 32, Distilling &c.]. Superheated steam may be admitted to the chamber 18. The heaviest distilled fraction is of the consistency of pitch and may be used for briquetting coal &c.
