Abstract

276,698. G÷tz & S÷hne Kommandit- Ges., S. Aug. 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Electrical systems, automatic.-A signal at a level crossing is actuated automatically as the train approaches and passes the crossing, independently of the direction of traffic, by a combiration of contact members which normally occupy opposite positions, are caused to occupy similar positions as a train approaches, to move simultaneously to reversed positions as the train passes and to assume opposite positions as the train moves away from the crossing. Insulated rail sections, J1, J2, as shown in Fig. 1, or magneto generators actuated by the deflection of the rails may be used to control the apparatus and are placed at some distance on each side of the crossing and are each connected to the relay device by a single wire only. The relay shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is actuated mechanically as the train passes the crossing but may be actuated electrically, if desired. The apparatus is shown in normal condition, one contact-carrying rod K1 being down and the other K2 up. These rods may move horizontally. A train passing towards the crossing over contact J1 energizes magnet m3 by a circuit including armature r1 contact. 15, 9, battery B and the rails. Armature r2 is moved and allows the contact rod K2 to fall. Both rods K1, K2 being down, the circuit to signal S is completed over the contacts 1, 4, and the signal remains operative until, as the train passes the crossing, both rods are raised and retained by their detents. As the train passes the contact J2 beyond the crossing, a. circuit is made over contect 16, 8 to magnet m4 and allows rod K2 to fall. The apparatus is now reset ready for actuation by a train in either direction. Front contacts 13, 14 are provided in a holding circuit to the relay magnets to ensure that the rods K1, K2 are released as the train passes the rail contact. If magneto-generators are used for operating the relays, a dash-pot control on the relay armatures is fitted to maintain closed the energizing circuit between the successive impulses.
